About Dussehra

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival celebrated at the end of Navaratri every year. It is observed on the tenth day in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin, which typically falls in September or October. This festival signifies the victory of good over evil, commemorating Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana, as depicted in the epic, Ramayana.

The most popular legend associated with Dussehra is from the epic poem, the Ramayana. According to this narrative, the demon king Ravana of Lanka kidnapped Sita, the wife of Lord Rama. To rescue her, Rama, along with his brother Lakshmana and devotee Hanuman, led an army to Lanka. After a fierce battle, Rama killed Ravana on the tenth day, which is commemorated as Dussehra. Effigies of Ravana, along with his brother Kumbhkaran and son Meghnath, are burned as a symbol of the destruction of evil.
